Styling Your Outdoor Space Like a Designer

Styling your outdoor space is all about creating a comfortable, beautiful extension of your home. Thoughtfully layered furniture, curated decor, and natural elements like stone, turf, and landscaping add depth and charm. Whether it's a cozy patio or sprawling yard, the right design brings warmth, style, and year-round enjoyment outdoors.

I love creating conversation areas in my interior design projects, so I use that same method outdoors too. Around the pool, I have three different areas with furniture. One section has two loungers, one seating area has a sofa, and one has our dining table and chairs. I love the energy it brings and the space for hosting too.
I also love keeping within a color theme! Black and white is a classic color combo in the interior of my home, so I extended it into the backyard as well. Black and white stripes, specifically, felt very "resort" while still being light and inviting. I paired it with classic ginger jars and plenty of rattan accents.

Screened-in porches in Iowa are the perfect three-season spaces, offering comfort and charm from spring through fall. As winter fades, these porches become cozy retreats to enjoy blooming trees and warm breezes without pesky bugs. In summer, they’re ideal for shaded relaxation and evening conversations. Come fall, the crisp air pairs perfectly with warm drinks and soft throws. Styling these porches with playful, colorful decor brings energy and personality. Think geometric rugs, cozy yet durable furniture, and a curated mix of patterned pillows that invite lounging. Layer in lanterns, plants, and an unexpected light fixture for a functional, welcoming outdoor haven.
