  • Trend Alert: Hints of Red

You've likely seen the new trend of adding a "touch" of red as a unexpected element. It's surely a fashion statement, but it's also impactful in the home! We wanted to share a few ways that you can pop on this trend too- whether you want to go for it or keep it subtle! The iconic staircase in the Presidential Suite at The Greenbrier odes to the history of this famous hue. Red may be popping up now, but this accent shade has always been around! Paired with greens, bright white, and natural wood tones, the red staircase runner layers in exactly how it should- pungent and unexpected. A navy blue binding on the runner adds an extra layer of elegance! We love this designer trick to make it look more sophisticated and intentional. We don't see full saturated rooms in red, but throw pillows, artwork, and styling pops are perfect to try with this trend! Red looks beautiful paired with green and blue especially. Photo credit (in order): Brie Williams, Decorilla, Ariel Okin Photo credit: Pinterest Sofia Richie is the ultimate style muse! We love her hints of red and the attention it's gotten from the fashion community. Whether it's a handbag or Mary Jane flats, we love it! We created an inspiring moodboard filled with different shades of red to show the opportunities! Color swatches, fabrics, textures, and finishes all bring something to the table! We pulled a few pieces from House of Blum to get your head-start on this trend! Comment below if you are adding a little read to your home! • Setting the Easter Table: Classic Collections

The first holiday to welcome spring and a new beginning, we love dressing the table for this holiday! We kept it fairly muted while letting the flowers and table settings pop! Our newest obsession this season: Cabbage Plates! The textures and beautiful, classic green will make a beautiful collection! I have such a passion for creating and being creative! Setting the table each holiday is something I look forward to. For Easter, I love pulling true Easter colors- pastels, greens, & pink! Keeping is classic with black and white is always a great combo too! For the place setting, we leaned on layers. First, a rattan Serpentine placemat adds whimsy and natural textures. Then, we layered our antique-style Giulietta Floral Dinner Plate underneath the two Cabbage Plates. The top layer are our sweet Bryar Baskets and homemade nests. Gold and silver flatware tie in the gold from the Bamboo Napkin Rings too! We love a great linen napkin for entertaining. These Floral Moss & Mauve napkins are so perfect for the spring and summer months! If you've been following our DIY series on Instagram, we paired this cute napkin with our Easter eggs to make a little bunny ear! We linked the reel here! We wish you all a very happy Easter! Send us photos of your Easter table at hello@meghanbluminteriors.com! Cheers!

Living in the Midwest, our outdoor spaces are well used areas through spring-fall! We're sharing a few outdoor living ideas so you can spend your warmer months relaxing in your updates space! For this outdoor space, we selected furnishings for the living area and dining nook. We absolutely love this kitchen/living combo on this covered deck. The decorative features of the cedar-planked ceiling and stone columns add an elevated feel. The stone flooring grounds the space well and adds that extra layer of comfort! Pool houses are becoming more and popular among our clients. It's a functional space to entertain without your primary home getting wet and dirty. We really like to hone in on the playful & energizing feel that a pool house embodies! Patterned pillows, striped wallpaper, & unique decor is what makes the pool house really shine at our #TimelessBeauty project. One of our favorite features is the wall with sun hats on hooks! • Struggling with decor? Here's our best styling tips.

This time of year sparks all the inspirations for refreshing our homes. One of the easiest (& quickest) ways to refresh your space is through decor! Yes, buying new decor is always fun to shop for, but rethinking what you already have does the trick too! Here are a few of our best decorating hacks! From kitchens to living rooms, we have all the bases covered! You can find the links to these products at the end of this blog post! tip #1: bookshelves & etageres Bookshelves are etageres can be overwhelming to decorate. There are so many shelves & bare spaces to fill. Here's what we would do: Set your first layer to add height. Layer books, boxes, or trivets first. On the second to bottom shelf, you will see we aligned 4-5 book standing straight up too. Then, add our art! We like including a few pieces. Here, we set one directly on the shelf & one on s stand. Add something large. Our large coral bowl is a staple for us. It's large scale & looks. beautiful with greens. Time for smaller pieces! Statement decor, mini lamps, & vases finish off the shelf beautifully! tip #2: living room side tables We like to keep it simple on these surfaces! One statement lamp and something smaller next to it is a nice balance. We love the Linden Lamp you can find on houseofblum.com- it is large scale & a great conversation piece! Picture frames, small bowls filled with candy, or trivet dishes are all great ideas. Large coffee table books also look beautiful layered! tip #3: nightstands Doesn't everyone want to wake up to fresh flowers on their nightstands? We understand this isn't the norm & we don't live this way either! Here's a few beautiful nightstand styling tips! We love adding a statement lamp to the nightstand. Layered on top of a few books and that's really all you need. Adding a few accessories you love or a vase ready for fresh florals is also always a good idea! Smaller trays can become functional for holding your phone, lip balm, or other nighttime routine rituals. It really can be as easy as 1, 2, 3! tip #4: coffee tables This is one of our favorite places to style! A large scale coffee table provides so much surface area for objects, books, & layering pieces. For a square table, we opt for splitting the table into four quadrants. A tray filled with smaller items (candle, crystal jar & faux tulips). A book cradle is perfect for displaying an open book. Share with your guests by opening to your favorite page! A textural bowl or object! Large scale & textured are a perfect duo. This wavy bowl is a gorgeous choice! Boxes layered! Add smaller sculptures on top for a unique look. tip #4: entry tables As an impressionable space, dressing an entry accordingly is important! The acessories and furniture pieces placed in this space should be functional and interesting. One of our favorite accessories is the Rings for Brains sculpture. We love the scale & marble base with contrasting black. It's fun to look at it and it really catches your eye. We love it paired with a feminine branch & more traditional pottery vase. For Meghan's entry, she leaned in on a modern/traditional take with mostly black & white colors. The abstract artwork is unexpected and packs a punch! If you need help styling any more spaces in your home, let us know in the comments! We would love to help you! To shop the posts, click on this link.

  • #PolishedPatina Project Moodboards

It's so exciting beginning a new interior design project! We are working on this clients home and their secondary home in Scottsdale, Arizona! We feel so thankful & blessed to be working with such wonderful people on such fabulous designs. She loves color, classical elements, & traditional motifs... but she's not afraid to push the envelope. What more could a designer ask for? We've had some questions on this project, so we wanted to do a deep dive into the process & progress with you! This is a full home remodel project with furnishings & decor! Entry We always push for a beautiful entryway. It's the first thing that greets you each day and you walk by it frequently. It's also the first room anyone sees when entering your home- it's important! A gorgeous polished nickel chandelier sets the mood. One of our favorite pieces in this space is the doefoot side tables that secures to the wall. On the opposite side of the entry, a console with two flanking chairs sit. We love adding seating to the entry for clients to put on shoes or hang coats. It's those little luxuries you receive when hiring a designer who is thoughtful about your lifestyle! Primary Suite Tranquil, classic, & slightly formal are the vibes for the primary suite! I especially love the chandelier & mirrors above the nightstands. It adds that touch of glam with only a few pieces. The fabrics for this space for cool blues & floral patterns! Main Living Areas The heart of the home! These four spaces work in unison, but also stand alone really well. Blending color palettes & aesthetics from room to room is important to consider as a designer. I love the warm tones in the great room rug along with the elegant dining room fixture! It's a privilege to be able to design for peoples lifestyles. We can't wait for our clients to be able to enjoy this space! Laundry Room Function is the most important aspect when it comes to utility spaces. We didn't waste any space in this laundry / mudroom space. Floor to ceiling cabinets, lockers, & countertop space will work perfectly for our clients! Peek at the wallpaper, lighting options, & selections we picked below! Lower Level Living Room We saw this custom ping pong table from one of our furniture vendors at market and have been dying to add to a project! We cannot WAIT to see how this will turn out! The rug & ottomans make it feel like a casual piece of beautiful furniture versus game table- we love that. We will be sharing the progress on our Instagram to follow along! We can't wait to see Polished Patina come to life! Share in the comments which room you are most looking forward to seeing come to life!

  • One of a Kind Collection!

Such an exciting collection went live on houseofblum.com today! I spent a year browsing through antique shops an collecting a truly curated One of a Kind, antique collection. I have been asked so many times where I source my personal items in my home and most are antiques. We took the time out of the hunt, and delivered beautiful pieces to you! Let me know in the comments which are your favorites!w "I love how vintage items breathe life into a home. Imperfections & patina layers in richness & history- unlike any other piece." -Meghan Blum Imbedding antiques into your home is both unique and affordable! It's also a sustainable way to decorate and style. The hunt is the fun part for a designer, but I understand that that can be the stressful aspect of antique-ing. My kitchen is a space in my home that is full of found treasures! I love to style my kitchen bookshelves with antiques. It's a great way to switch out color & play around with new combinations. There are so. many beautiful pitchers & vases in this collection- perfect for kitchen styling! One combo we're loving for spring & summer is this yellow & pink! It's bright, energetic, & just happy in the home! Let us know in the comments which pieces you're loving the most!! If antiques is something you are loving from House of Blum, let us know!

  • A Valentines Day Table

Valentine's Day is such a fun one to celebrate! Whether it's celebrated with your friends or a special someone, it's fun for everyone! It's also a treat with kiddos getting Valentine's made and finding little treats for them! We wanted to have our own celebration, so MBI is hosting a Galentine's Sip & Shop at our studio on Tuesday, Feb. 13 from 11am-2pm! We would love to see you there! We will have some new items in the showroom that are great for gifting or for your own personal homes! Invite your friends- we can't wait to see you! For a little Valentine's inspo, we wanted to share a pretty tablescape! Some of the items are a part of our Antiques Collection launching later this week, so stay tuned for that! Everything else is available now on House of Blum! I'm also linking a few of my personal favorites for Valentine's gifting & wish list items! We love this soft pink and green theme! The Dove & Cypress napkins were a hit last year, so we added the same print in placemats. The linen touch adds softness and extra emphasis on the pattern- which we love! The settings are simply drawn with a placemat, Natural Melamine Bamboo Plate in the dinner and salad size, a matching Dove & Cypress Napkin pulled through our new Gold Bamboo Rings. Two goblet sizes in crystal and red are accented perfectly (these are included in of our antique collection)! Our Quatrefoil serving board adds height to the centerpiece (also in the Antique Collection) and a statement focal point of bright white! Hosting Tip: for stress-free serving, we opt for Melamine plates! They aren't breakable and can be put in the dishwasher- win win! Let us know in the comments how you are spending Valentine's Day! We hope to see you at our party on the 13th! Cheers, friends!!

  • One-Room Wonders: Complete Transformations

We work on both full-home design projects, but also are successful at completing one-room wonders! We get so many questions if MBI offers design services to single rooms and the answer is... absolutely! Whether you want to completely revamp your space or layer in finishing touches, we would love to hear from you! Below we're sharing a few of our one-room wonder projects! We tried to compile the before photos as well, but some are new construction projects. Leave a question in the comments or what blogs you would like to see from us in 2024! Colorful Chalet: Living Room & Office First, we designed the office and a few years later we completed the living room. Some clients prefer us to design one room at a time and we enjoy the devoted attention it offers. This home was existing and is a cosmetic remodel. With fresh paint and furnishings, these spaces are completely transformed! BEFORE AFTER For the living room, we added fresh paint to the walls and ceiling, but kept the trimwork and beams the same stained wood tone. A new rug, furnishings, and decor were designed with interest & energy in mind. Solid upholstered sofas and chairs paired beautifully with the striped ottoman. Orange and green patterns play in the seating area and bounce tones off the custom draperies. Painted woodwork is such a trend we're seeing in design for 2024! Although this project is a few years old, it still stands beautiful today. Blue and orange are a classic combo. A mix of stripes, chevron, & geometric patterns bring a playful side to a traditionally serious space. Designed for conversing & enjoying an evening cocktail, this office is indeed a one-room wonder! BEFORE AFTER Whimsy Lynx: Living Room We loved designing this space for a dear client & friend! Her style is exciting and filled with color- a fresh opportunity! She spends a lot of time browsing through design books & magazines in this space, so there needed to be beautiful perching spots. BEFORE AFTER The traditional tailored sofa with a swivel chair was the best option. Another swivel chair with a skirted bullion fringe is now in the right corner of the room (not pictured). For this space, we added the rugs, furniture, task lighting, & decor. It turned out beautiful & has elevated our client's life- the best outcome! Menswear Style Home Office: Home Office When our clients are willing to go for it, it's a dream to design! The bones of this office were great, so we added a few designer layers to make it pop. The woodwork was already painted a beautiful grey/blue color and we wanted to play off that. We added a slightly patterned grasscloth in a lighter colorway to create a cozy element. Custom draperies make an impact and the plaid fabric played off the menswear vibe. A traditional, ornate desk in a rich black finish adds statement and texture. We filled the built-ins with accessories and mixed in their awards and collectibles as well. A leather swivel chair nestled in the corner of the room is perfect for meeting as a couple and fills the space well with a different fabric material. MBI is now accepting clients for spring and summer 2024! We would love to hear from you and begin planning and designing your dream space. • Working with MBI: Our Services

The beginning of a new year holds so much inspiration and opportunity! We've received some questions about our services and what it looks like to work with a designer at MBI, so we wanted to answer those burning questions here! Decor & Furnishings This is the perfect service if you aren't building a new home or remodeling, but still want a change in the way your home looks with furniture, artwork, lighting, rugs, and decor. A comfortable environment that embodies movement, inspiration, and your unique interests is so important to a successful space. First, you will meet with a designer to gather the scope of your project. They will take measurements and see your space to gather ideas and direction. Then, the designer will prepare a conceptional presentation to be sure the design style is aligned with your vision! After the specific items are selected and approved, the designer will order your pieces. Once they arrive in perfect condition, our design team and installers will install your pieces! We like to layer in decor and finishing touches to finish the space beautifully! This is a seamless process and brings fantastic results! New Construction Clients ideally hire us at the beginning of their new build to choose all selections for their homes. We also provide our expertise with layout, electrical walkthrough, trim stages, and other designer details. We select all the hard finishes (flooring, tile, countertops, cabinetry, trim details, lighting, plumbing fixtures, paint colors, etc.) and layer in the soft finishes to complete the project (furniture, rugs, pillows, bedding, artwork, task lighting, decor, etc.). One of our favorite things as designers is being able to visualize and design the full picture! When we work with contractors on the build of the home and follow that with the beautiful pieces placed inside, it's a special outcome. Photos below are shared of a beautiful primary bathroom from our #TimelessBeauty project that shows the transition from construction to installation, to completion. Layering in furniture, lighting, window treatments, and decor makes the space feel like home, even in the bathrooms! construction installation completion Remodel Full-home remodels are one of our specialties here at MBI! We've designed a few wonderful remodel projects and it's rewarding working with our client on reenvisioning their existing home. We shared a few dramatic before and afters from our #RevivedGlam project below! A formal foyer is the perfect place to pack a punch and make a statement! The only element of this space we kept was the staircase! We added custom millwork, fresh paint, new flooring, furniture and decor, mirrors, faux plants, and lighting to level up this space! Color was a big attribute of this project. Our clients wanted color and it to feel sophisticated, energizing, and classic. We kept the furnishings fairly neutral while adding decor and artwork to bring in color. This laundry room needed aesthetics and function. We didn't expand this space or reformat, but we did redesign the cabinetry, and that made a large difference. We added a sink with cabinetry to the left of the appliances and custom drying racks that pull out to the right of the appliances. We placed a large countertop space in the middle for folding clothes. Beadboard backsplash is a pretty detail that we hung artwork on. Wallpaper in this floral motif added a little beauty to this space! The crystal beaded flush mount acts as a focal point and a great source of lighting too! If you are looking for an experienced interior design team to work on your projects, we are accepting clients for 2024 spring and summer! If you have any more questions on our services, please visit this page on our website- https://www.meghanbluminteriors.com/des-moines-interior-design-services . • Statement Stripes: Bedroom Reveal

We're kicking off the new year with such an inspiring space! My sons, Victor and Harrison, began sharing a bedroom last year and it was so fun to redesign their shared space. They moved into Victor's existing room- he had wallpaper, draperies, a light fixture, and a few furnishings that we kept. I love the bunk bed look and it fits better than two twin beds here. I wanted this room to feel comfortable and playful, but polished at the same time. Fun furniture silhouettes like the spindle chair upholstered in orange fabric and the drum ottoman bring a youthful feel. I love blue & orange together so this was always going to be the colorways. When Traditional Home approached me last winter about photographing our home for the holidays, I knew I wanted to finish each space how I always envisioned it. The little details always go the furthest! I had custom lumbar pillows embroidered with their names and I love the way it turned out! The mix of stripes, gingham, and chevron adds such a layer of whimsy to their beds. The orange and white striped ceiling is one of my favorite design decisions to date! It's painted and of course, we're sharing the paint colors with you! This is such an easy weekend project that brings an extra layer of drama to your space! orange paint color: Husky Orange by Sherwin Williams (6636) My son, Victor, created this beautiful piece of artwork and it was featured in the Des Moines Art Festival! I got it framed and I love the way it worked in his bedroom. Designer tip: I suggest adding those special touches to the more intimate spaces of your home. Homemade art from the kids is such a sweet way to make it personal. Get it framed to match our decor for a designer finish. For the bunkbeds, I linked the exact bed in a similar finish below! I will also link a few other items that you can shop on LTK! Click here for bunk bed link. Click here for LTK links to shop the room. I encourage you to tackle that space in our home that has been on your mind! And approach it with flavor! You will not have regrets about being authentic and unique in your designs!

  • Thoughts as we close out 2023...

Wow, I can’t believe another year has gone by and we are closing the chapter of 2023. It was another great year and my heart feels so full and alive. I always enjoy this time of year to reflect and all that a new year brings! First and foremost I couldn’t close the year without thanking my exceptional design team. I am so fortunate to have a team that works so well together. The world of social media makes it look like I’m doing it all but it is all of their hard work that keeps everything moving. They are talented in their roles, extremely kind, and most importantly they like to have fun. We laugh a lot! And isn’t that what life is all about? That, to me, is a success- making the world more beautiful and having fun at the same time! Thank you MBI team for rocking it! I am also so very thankful for our clients and MBI supporters. You all make what we do so rewarding. The connection to you and your life’s story is so enjoyable and we love weaving your unique story into our designs. We appreciate your willingness to trust our creativity and give you truly beautiful homes. Our interior design industry is complex and at times, misunderstood. Running a design business is not for the faint of heart and requires attention to detail, people skills, creativity, and lots of documentation. I wanted this year to feel different and not get pulled down by the complexities of the business. I wanted to feel more alive and follow the sparkle on my path. I lived more in the moment and felt the success all around. 2023 was a year of growth that I can look back on and feel really good about. I turned 40 in August and it was a time to really reflect on transitioning into a new decade and that felt good! I have focused on more of my personal development and this year was no exception. I went on a retreat in November and came back feeling more alive and connected to my purpose. I look forward to using that energy for good and exciting things ahead. Cheers to a year of success and another exciting year ahead! One of the highlights of the year was being featured in a national publication not once but twice. Thank you Traditional Home for the feature and amazing honor.  I have looked through my mom's magazine since I was a little girl and never in my wildest dreams would have dreamt  I would be featured in it. Let alone be named a Rising Design Star as a feature. It truly was an honor that I am so blown away to receive. It was a joy to have our home featured as well and the kids had so much fun participating and knowing they would be in something so special. I love exampling what being a strong working mom can look like. Thank you to Traditional Home for the feature and exclusive list. I am truly honored and grateful! Cheers! -Meghan
