Before & After: A Family Home Update

I hope it’s evident that we love what we do at MBI. It’s the biggest privilege in the world to be able to use our creativity to reimagine rooms, design homes from scratch or to help pick out a single piece for our clients. Every project, big or small, inspires and motivates us. It’s pretty incredible how design impacts lives and we see it over and over again.

We recently helped with a living and family room update for a sweet family in the DSM metro. Our clients wanted a living room refresh that opened up their space without sacrificing comfort. Their previous set up included several oversized pieces that made an already challenging floor plan even harder to layout. A sleeker sectional and a chaise lounge provide all the seating they need while also keeping the space feeling open and breezy. Kid friendly materials, a tufted ottoman and gorgeous new carpeting make this a soft space to spend as a family. We placed most of the accents and decor on a console behind the sofa and restyled the original built-ins. Incorporating decor this way adds personality and sophistication to the room without adding stress to daily life with kids in the house.

Another space in the house that was due for a makeover was the play room. It had been the perfect space for little kids to explore and make believe but what the kids of the house need now is a place to practice the piano, read books and do homework. We swapped out the colorful walls, rug and toys for comfortable seating, great lighting and a neutral color palette easy to focus in. The wallpaper, rug and upholstery in this space give great textures that make you want to sit and stay a while. This room will grow with the kids of the house and even be a great space as-is when they’re grown and out of the house.

We didn’t stop at those living spaces. Wallpaper in the stairway and a new look for a previously unused wall were easy ways to make the entire house feel as updated as the two main living rooms. Getting to work with this great family to change their home to suit their current life stage was a joy and we love how it turned out.

We’re always excited to take on redesign projects like this and would love to help you on your next project, big or small!
